If we take the example of a common window lock, the Espagnolette. They range in length from 4 inches to 4 foot. A popular length is around 2 feet long, but there are 18 variations on this size lock. Forcing the wrong lock into a window can damage the window, break the glass or cause the new lock to wear out prematurely. Similarly, and more importantly, having the correct window hinge on your window is vital.

Most hinges look exactly the same and will work fine in the wrong location, however if the hinges on your bedroom window are not a fire escape egress type then you may find it impossible to escape in the event of a fire. Conversely, there is a trend for window suppliers to use egress hinges on all their windows. Unfortunately, egress hinges do not last as long as counterbalanced hinges and they are prone to being damaged by wind. Thus should only be used where they are necessary.
